- What Is Mat Pilates?
When you first hear the term “mat Pilates,” what comes to mind? Is it a group of people rolling around on the floor or a series of stretches that seem way too challenging? Rather than making use of intimidating equipment, mat Pilates makes use of your body weight and a simple floor mat for cushioning. First developed in the early 1900’s by Joseph Pilates, mat Pilates focuses on stretching and strengthening the primary muscles of the core. Borrowing techniques from dance, yoga, and gymnastics, mat Pilates adapts to the strengths and weaknesses of your body.
Exercises within mat Pilates vary by instructor. As you become more acquainted with this exercise, you’ll find the routines increase in difficulty. The majority of mat classes begin with traditional Joseph Pilates five-part ab exercises known as the hundred, leg circles, and roll-ups. From strengthening your core, or “Powerhouse” as Joseph Pilates called it, you’ll increase the overall health of your body, deter injury, and ward off back pain making everyday activities easily doable.
The Benefits Of Mat Pilates
The main fitness goals of mat Pilates programs include improved flexibility, muscle tone, balance, spinal support, lower back health, sports performance, and body-mind awareness. If you’re an athlete, especially a runner, a strong core is needed for stamina and power. Your limbs will benefit from an increased core strength preventing injury from forceful movement, as well. Overall, mat Pilates provides an array of benefits for those looking to better perform everyday activities, athletes in need of strengthened cores, and even those suffering from lower back pain!
